Definition of coercive diplomacy:
"Diplomacy which threatens actions which are going to hurt an entity."
Re: North Korea ....
In the past two administration, sanctions against North Korea were very ineffective and weak. Now, because of recent changes (China showing great concern over North Korea threatening their core interests and so might hold back food and fuel; and the U.S. threat of military action becoming credible) sanctions could be more effective.
China's considerations: A war in the Korean peninsula would be very detrimental core interests. South Korea or Japan going nuclear is also detrimental to their core interests.
Not China alone, but China and the U.S. working together could put together a powerful set of disincentives that might be effective.
